There was a big period in my life as a pure practitioner when I knew nothing but a simple yoga practice, spacifically, Sun Salutation A and B and a few more poses. At the time, I couldn’t afford multiple yoga classes at the studio, and my tiny apartment left no room for elaborate sequences. I should clarify—besides my simple yoga practice, I was a bit obsessed with Headstand and needed a clear space to fall safely. That’s when I found the rooftop of my apartment, a shared space where people usually used to hang and dry their laundry.
The rooftop was far from perfection—dirty ground, a stray clothesline here and there, It turned so hot by 7 am and, most inconveniently, no WIFI. Without internet, I couldn’t rely on YouTube or any other online resources to guide me. So, I turned to what I could memorize: the simplicity of repetitive sequences and the rhythm of my breath. I would wake up before sunrise, head to the rooftop, and practice by myself.
This stripped-down approach was not just a necessity but became a gift.
Reflecting back, here are 5 reasons why simple yoga practice can be more than enough:
1. Simplicity Nurtures Depth
When you narrow your focus to just a few sequences or poses, you give yourself the opportunity to explore them in depth. You’re not rushing to keep up with a video or remember complex flows. Instead, you’re refining your alignment, paying attention to your breath, and truly connecting with your body and mind.
2. Repetition Builds Strength and Stamina
Simple sequences practiced consistently are incredibly effective. Movements like forward folds, plank, and downward dog build strength and endurance when repeated regularly. I noticed my body becoming stronger and my stamina improving, even though I wasn’t doing anything “fancy.”
3. It’s a Meditation in Motion
Repeating the same practice every day turned it into a moving meditation. I wasn’t distracted by what pose came next or whether I was doing it “right” because I already knew the sequence. This allowed me to focus on the rhythm of my breath and the sensations in my body, creating a sense of flow and peace.
4. It Encourages Discipline
Showing up daily for a simple yoga practice taught me the power of discipline. It wasn’t about creating an Instagram-worthy flow or chasing the next big pose ( But my headstand of-course lol ). It was about being consistent and intentional, even if that meant practicing alone on a rooftop with no distractions other than the sunrise.
5. Simplicity Equals Accessibility
You don’t need a lot of space, expensive props, fancy outfit or an internet connection to start a meaningful yoga practice. All you need is your body, your breath, may be a good yoga mat and above of everything, the willingness to show up. This simplicity makes yoga accessible to everyone, no matter their circumstances.
Looking back, that phase of practicing alone on the rooftop with no WIFI taught me some of the most valuable lessons about yoga. It’s not about the complexity of the poses or the variety of flows—it’s about the connection you create with yourself. Simple yoga practice taught me to find joy in the basics, strength in repetition, and peace in simplicity. To this day, when life feels overwhelming, I return to the foundation of simple yoga practice, and it never fails to ground me.
So, if you’ve been hesitating to start or doubting whether your practice is “good enough,” let me remind you: it already is. Whether it’s a single pose, a short flow, or simply sitting with your breath, every effort you make is valid and valuable.
I’d love to hear about your yoga journey. What does your practice look like right now?
